Framework for Recognition of Training in Interventional Neuroradiology (INR)

The ANZSNR, in collaboration with the ANZAN and the NSA, is pleased to announce the implementation of a new framework for the recognition of training in Interventional Neuroradiology (INR) across Australia and New Zealand.

Importantly, there is no change to the Standards for Recognition of Training in INR. The jointly endorsed INR Standards remain the benchmark for the training, experience and ongoing competency requirements required for recognition as an INR practitioner. These Standards continue to reflect the commitment of the three parent organisations to safe, high-quality INR practice and remain unchanged as part of this transition.

As of 1 July 2026, the former Conjoint Committee for Recognition of Training in Interventional Neuroradiology (CCINR) has been replaced by the Recognition of Training in Interventional Neuroradiology Standards Working Group (INR-SWG). This change represents a transition in governance , rather than a change to the requirements for recognition of INR training.

Under the new framework, responsibility for assessing applications for recognition of INR training will sit with the relevant parent body — ANZSNR for radiologists, ANZAN for neurologists, and the NSA for neurosurgeons. Each organisation will assess applications within its respective specialty area against the agreed INR Standards.

The INR-SWG will continue to provide an important role in maintaining consistency and quality across the recognition process. Comprising representatives from all three parent organisations, the INR-SWG will act as an advisory body, providing expert peer review of assessments, supporting a consistent approach across specialties, and monitoring and reviewing the INR Standards to ensure they remain current and reflective of contemporary practice.

This means that while final recognition decisions will be made by the relevant parent body, applications will continue to benefit from collaborative, multidisciplinary review through the INR-SWG process. This approach preserves the collegiate oversight and shared commitment to standards that have underpinned INR recognition in Australia and New Zealand.

A formal Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) has been established between ANZSNR, ANZAN and the NSA to support this framework and define the shared responsibilities of the three organisations in maintaining the INR Register and overseeing recognition of training applications.

The new structure follows RANZCR’s decision to conclude its administrative responsibilities for the CCINR, effective 30 June 2026, and ensures a sustainable governance model for the future management of INR recognition.
