Australian Stroke Study presented at International Stroke Conference (ISC)

Researchers from the Royal Melbourne Hospital, including ANZSNR Secretary General Associate Professor Peter Mitchell, presented the results of the Extend-IA study this week at the International Stroke Conference in Nashville, Tennessee. Extend IA compared endovascular clot extraction plus intravenous lysis with IV lysis alone in patients presenting with ischaemic stroke. The study was stopped early because of significant benefit in the endovascular arm. Two other studies presented at the same meeting (ESCAPE and SWIFT-PRIME) also supported endovascular treatment, adding to the positive results reported in the recent MR-CLEAN trial.

The news was widely reported in the mainstream media, including the ABC in Australia.
